• 9 hikers were killed while on a week-long outing with Ikonnikoff Outdoor Adventures

• Included in the casualties were:
  • Frances Hu
  • Jordan Hu
  • James Wisdom
  • Trip Ikonnikoff's son

Retelling by The Sentinel

A sudden lightning storm brewed on the last day of the trip, and a nearby lightning strike simultaneously disabled the group's keys and started a forest fire. The group set off emergency flares, but were overwhelmed by smoke before rescuers had an opportunity to respond. The fire subsequently took nearly a week to extinguish.
