==Summary==

After discovering that [[V]] called someone at the [[Academy]]'s [[Crypto|Crypto Department]], [[Caine]] heads over to Crypto to investigate. He runs into his friend [[Neville Clark]], who is [http://www.theoozezone.com/archives/2006/06/dolor_sit_amet.html talkative], if obfuscating. The Cube Hunters entice Nev into sharing more information by giving him a [http://www.theoozezone.com/archives/2006/06/cracker.html puzzle], designed by [[User:jbd|jbd]], to solve. Nev takes the bait, and gives us a [http://www.theoozezone.com/archives/2006/06/cracked_1.html backdoor] that leads to a gridded file system.

Dragging the commands onto the grid to create various configurations yields a series of log snippets. Some of the logs resemble the [[Perplex City Errorlogs]] that were found before the [[puzzle cards]] were released.

The Cube Hunters entice Nev into sharing more information by giving him a [http://www.theoozezone.com/archives/2006/06/cracker.html puzzle], designed by [[User:jbd|jbd]], to solve. Nev takes the bait, and gives us a [http://www.theoozezone.com/archives/2006/06/cracked_1.html backdoor] that leads to a gridded file system.

The Department has begun registration for its annual conference, [[De/Cipher]], to be held on [[Academy]] grounds 2-6 October. The conference covers a wide range of topics, from the latest cutting-edge avenues of research, to business models and concerns, to ethical and legal considerations. Currently enrolled students are highly encouraged to contact their advisors in order to take advantage of free registration.
Congratulations to the Department [[Wheel]] team, which took first place in this term's inter-departmental competition! The final match, against the [[Department of Natural Sciences]], was a close 3-2 victory during extra time.

===Council Cooperative Agreement===

The Academy [[Department of Cryptology]] has an agreement with the [[City Council]] of Perplex City to share information and discoveries relevant to the safe and smooth operation of the city. From time to time, the Department's research results in knowledge that would threaten the security of our economic and military institutions, were it to become public knowledge. Under the terms of our agreement, the Council permits absolutely unfettered research, while holding all affiliated with the department to an ethical standard that requires discrete and prompt disclosure of relevant algorithms and technology.

Nonetheless, under the terms of our agreement, the department operates primarily to benefit the people and businesses of the city, and not the government. We choose not to participate in government-instigated research or applications that threaten the privacy of the individual Perplexian. After all, everyone is entitled to a secret; even if it's just an excessive affection for [[harbonnes]].

===Why Cryptology?===

Cryptology is, simply put, the lifeblood of Perplex City. The Academy Department of Cryptology has its roots deeply entwined with civic and economic advancement. From [[PCBC|banking]] to communications, our modern lifestyle relies heavily on the peace of mind that cryptologic research gives to every single citi~en. Here at the Academy, we don&~rpf;t just study cryptology; we define it. Whatever program you participate in, you will be sure to encounter the finest minds in the discipline, and you will be given the tools to conduct research that was barely at the edge of imagination a mere ten years ago. No other cryptological department in the world offers such a breathtaking opportunity.

During their time at the Department, our students also get to deepen their understanding by considering real-world problems and applications and participate in internships and consultancies with a broad range of interests, from the [[PCBC]] and [[Centrifuge]] to the [[City Council]], or even the Earth. Whether it's Porta's proof of the Panton Theorem or Leckworthy's analysis of the Earth-Perplex City data link, each student is sure to find a compelling challenge.

Alumni of the Department have gone on to illustrious careers in research and business -- or both. Our own Master of the Academy, [[Sente Kiteway]], famously embarked on a stellar academic career before making his fortune at [[Centrifuge]], and was Senior Fellow of the Department for 11 years before he was elected Master.

Though few individuals achieve the exceptional success of Master Kiteway, many of our students go on to very successful careers indeed; [[Walter Cove-Houghton]], who took a degree in the Department in 230, has stood for the [[PCBC]] as CTO and CEO after a successful consulting career; legendary [[Centrifuge]] researcher and now entrepreneur [[Gregory Dempsey]] was a 222 graduate; and [[City Council]] Member [[Kyra Anghanda]] had a very influential academic career, most notably devising the simplest algorithm ever created for creating and decoding the [[Olverton-Crane Scramble]], before leaving her Adjunct Senior Fellow spot for politics in 257.

Does it have something to do with content in the previously mentioned [[Anthony Granier|Granier Diary]]?

* Who created the [[Djinn]] virus? This was a virus that destroyed or accessed data on people's [[keys]], and was transmitted key-to-key. It was created by someone who accessed insider information at the [[Centrifuge]] labs - a company that manufactures keys. The answer to this question is also the answer to the silver [[Shuffled]] card.

* Who are those [[Public Unrest|crazy anarchist vandals]]? They've been vandalising Perplex City up a storm with their funny symbols and references to leading Earth Anarchist thinkers. Do they have anything to do with anything, or are they simply easy press-scare fodder?

* The [[London_PCAG_event#The_London_Eye_and_Morse_Code|London Morse Code Message]] - WTF? We have snippets that are possibly decoded, but no concrete solve for the full message. We were possibly meant to go to the Tate Gallery at some point, but clearly haven't. Chalk another one up to the 3P, y'all!

* Who, and where, is [[Cyrus Quinton]]? We think Cyrus Quinton was the operational mastermind of the Cube Theft Team (codename: V) who disappeared once he had murdered [[Monica Grand]]. V's DNA records are not on the city databases, according to police leiutenant [[Helena Frye]], which means he is either from outside the city, or has been able to hack into their records. Kurt can't find the name Cyrus Quinton on any databases either.

* Why build a Clean Room? Kurt stumbled across extremely well maintained tunnels beneath the Gillit Road Subway. In return for providing information on Quinton, Helena Frye revealed that the 3P were constructing a clean room for purposes unknown.

* [[Helena Frye]] - really as straight as all that? Helena Frye claims the [[Gillit Road]] fiasco was a legitimate secret [[Police]] operation gone wrong, no thanks to [[Kurt]]. But why did Kurt overhear the passing lackeys ask "why is Frye getting the police involved?" Was she a double-triple-something agent? And even if she is, as we assume, legit, we don't know anything about her obviously extensive counter-3P investigations. Or why she lied about the items found at the [[Five of Cups] to [http://www.perplexcitysentinel.com/archives/2005/08/police_close_ho.html The Sentinel].

* What do you mean, "we never held it"? When Monica died, she told Sylvia that the original theft team "never held it" - meaning The Receda Cube. Was this part of the plan? Did the Cube autotransport itself to Earth? Or was their whole operation a botched mission, or indeed a decoy from the real setup?

* Who was above [[V]] in the chain of command? We know he has a Bigger Boss, possibly representative of an even bigger Conspiracy. Who are these people?

* Who's crooked at the Academy? We know that Cyrus Quinton called the Academy and had a heated discussion with someone on the day following the theft. ([[Alejo]]: "Even our best production guy, Cyrus, was a little off that day - I remember he was having this big argument, said he was talking to Helix about his contract, but when I redialed from the studio console a little later to talk to Helix, I got some office at the Academy.") Also, Kurt's friend [http://thepathofleasttime.com/archives/2005/09/the_breakin.html speculated] (with an unknown level of actual information) that it would take at least two people to thoroughly circumvent the Academy's security systems, but said it was a "danger to say more." V also refers to someone "more senior", who probably resides at the Academy, and therefore is probably a Senior Fellow.

* Why steal the Cube? We currently can't ascribe a clear motive to the [[Third Power]] in their theft of the artefact.

* What happened on the night of [[Leaked_E-mails#Sneaky.21|7th Jan, 2004]]? One of the conspirators nearly gave the game away to a female somebody. They said a "challenge" line, and the person they were talking to (by chance) completed the "third element", at which point the conspirator started blabbing. They quickly realised their mistake and said that "I barely gave anything away before realising the error. She didn't appear suspicious." Does anyone remember anything?

* [[Inari Ekeba]] is a Professor Of Natural Sciences and wanted to do Cube Research, but [[Sente Kiteway]] wouldn't let her. The [[Leaked_E-mails#Senior_Fellows_Meet_with_Sente|meeting]] flared up and she rashly threatened to steal the Cube. Significant, or a red herring?

Natalie had been missing for days; everyone worried himself or herself sick for her, as they hadn’t seen heads or tails of her for three weeks. Ads in the paper, appearances on television, cash rewards for accurate help; nothing had worked. The entire Hilsenrod family was struck with anxiety and sadness. But nobody, not even Natalie’s own blood relatives, felt the pain that William felt.

William had supported Natalie’s decision to work for the Wexler Biotechnology Co., even if it meant only coming home on the major holidays. She would always write from her base, the specific lab where she and a few other scientists from around the world toiled night and day in search of various cures. It was definitely taxing on their marriage, but the distance only made their love stronger, helping to keep it alive.

But now, things had gone horribly wrong. Three weeks earlier, Base 9 had caught on fire, and all the staff that was working there, including Natalie, had gone missing. Once the fire had been put out and the damage assessed, no signs of any workers, nor a handful of research documents, could be found. But, one deduction was made very clear by the investigators: it was no accident that the compound went aflame.

William wrapped his arms in as comforting a hug as he could muster around Natalie’s mother as she continued on another fit of bawling. As much as he could sympathize with the rest of her family, the constant air of sadness was getting to him. All the memories, concerns, what-ifs, what-weres, what-could-have-beens; it was simply too much for William to bear for so long in one sitting.

He told the Hilsenrod family he was going to take a nice, long walk through Battery Park; perhaps the cool, autumn New York air could clear his mind and soothe his nerves. He donned his favorite brown jacket, left it unzipped, and meandered out of the apartment’s lobby in the park’s general direction, furrowed brow and panicking imagination in tow.

The light breeze blowing in his face was helping him relax. His shocks of dark brown hair swayed back ever so slightly, and William was lost in the moment. He had always loved New York City; the experience of being alone among so many people, and happy about it, would constant bring a light smile to his chapped lips. As the fall rainbow peered its way around the corner, he ambled along to the mouth of the nearest walkway, finally in the little safe haven he knew so well.

The state of affairs still weighed heavy on his mind, so he sat down on a convenient bench along the path. The wood creaked in welcome of William’s body, acclimating to his weight and holding him as he sat. He flung his head back, sighed, and took deep breaths of the chilled air around him; pragmatic meditation, one might say.

Minutes passed uneventfully, save for the occasional passerby, fantastically unconcerned with what William was doing. He was well relaxed, if not quite ready to return either to Natalie’s parent’s apartment, or his own. It was a blissful period of floating, detaching himself from the tethers of his chaos, if even just temporarily. At least that was the case until an older man sat down on the other end of the bench.

A fair period of silence passed between the two, until the man began studying William’s face intently. He was desperately trying to recall where he had seen William before, racking his brain and squinting thoughtfully. Then, it struck him very suddenly, prompting him to ask, “Sorry, but are you that guy whose wife got lost in that big Wexler fire?”

Grudgingly pulled from his makeshift zen, he rubbed his eyes and mumbled, “Yeah, why?”

“I saw you on television; hey, tough break, I hope things turn out alright.”

“So do I, believe me,” retorted William with a sliver of distaste in his tone.

“Well now, that’s no way to talk to well-wishers, kid.”

“No way to talk to twenty-something adults, old fart.”

“Cheek. Well, regardless, I think you might want this.”

The man opened a briefcase he had placed on the side opposite William, out of his view, and produced a piece of paper. It was a long string of three-digit numbers organized in a grid.

William took it, pondered over it, and then leered aghast as the meaning of the paper came to him. He recognized the pattern almost instantly as the emergency code he and Natalie shared, in case anything ever happened to one of them.

William glanced back and forth between the paper and the unknown man, his mind racing back to the present crisis at hand, and how crucial this paper was. Eventually he regained his senses enough to ask the gentleman, “Where the hell did you get this? How did you find me?”

At this, the mystery man leaned in and spoke very, very low. “I’m a colleague of your wife’s, the name’s Carter.”

“Carter Ford?”

“Yeah.”

“Natalie mentioned your name from time to time, aren’t you the supervisor of her base?”

“Bingo. I’m one of them, at least. I was off the work cycle that day when I received a fax from the lab. It was Natalie, she wrote that the guards in the lab staged a takeover and abducted most of the scientists. She was barely able to get the message to me before they got her and wrecked the base, I guess. I messaged her back with no response. That was all she sent, other than this grid and the clear instructions to find you in New York and make sure you got this.”

“I can’t thank you enough, Carter.”

“No problem. I know that the safety of my team is in danger, and I especially would hate to see Natalie in trouble, she’s one of the finest researchers we’ve got.”

“Alright, but I need the key. Did she give you that?”

“Nope,” Carter announced sternly.

“What?! You rotten bastard, what I am supposed to do?!”

“Wait for a while, I know you’ll get the key.”

With a sigh, William relented. “You’re right, sending a code and key at the same time is stupid, even in a panic, Natalie would know better.”

“Well, take care of yourself, kid.”

“You too, old fart.”

“Until we meet again.”

“When’s that?”

“Beats me,” Carter gleefully chirped.

With that, Carter shifted himself upright from the bench. As he closed and picked up his briefcase, the bench creaked its goodbye, and he walked quickly away. Will sat dumbfounded as he desperately tried to piece everything that just happened together with the situation. It sloshed about in his mind like a restless tide, each wave dredging different thoughts.

And then it all clicked in William’s mind: the code, the key, and the message were all before him. He jolted from the bench, folded the paper neatly in his pocket, and dashed for the subway entrance he passed on the way in, hoping to catch the soonest train home.

On arrival, William scrambled to his computer, booted up, and immediately scanned the numbers into an image and grafted the grid into type. From there, he dug deep into his file directory and pulled out what would open the way to an adventure the likes of which he was totally unprepared for.

He dragged the text into the window, entered the key, and watched the message unravel letter by letter before his eyes. The sheer immensity of what William now faced was so much that he was dumbstruck at what he read. Once he escaped the trance of his disbelief, he immediately booked the soonest possible coach flight out of JFK or LaGuardia, and began packing hastily for tomorrow night.

[[Viard]] produced an album on the [[Hesh Records]] label in late 2005. The album was found to have secret messages and hidden noises on it, which was deemed unsuitable for sale in [[Perplex City]]. The [[Perplex City Council]] had the album banned. So, Hesh Records decided to have it produced by [[Mind Candy]] on Earth.

And it was a smashing success. The album was initially released as part of a "start kit" to Firebox buyers who spent more than 100 pounds.

William had supported Natalie’s decision to work for the Wexler Biotechnology Co., even if it meant only coming home on the major holidays. She would always write from her base, the specific lab where she and a few other scientists from around the world toiled night and day in search of various cures. But now, things had gone horribly wrong. Three weeks earlier, Base 9 had caught on fire, and all the staff that was working there, including Natalie, had gone missing. At this, the mystery man leaned in and spoke very, very low. “I’m a colleague of your wife’s, the name’s Carter.”

“Carter Ford?”

“Yeah.”

“Natalie mentioned your name from time to time, aren’t you the supervisor of her base?”

“Bingo. I’m one of them, at least. I was off the work cycle that day when I received a fax from the lab. It was Natalie, she wrote that the guards in the lab staged a takeover and abducted most of the scientists. She was barely able to get the message to me before they got her and wrecked the base, I guess. I messaged her back with no response. That was all she sent, other than this grid and the clear instructions to find you in New York and make sure you got this.”

“No problem. I know that the safety of my team is in danger, and I especially would hate to see Natalie in trouble, she’s one of the finest researchers we’ve got.”

On arrival, William scrambled to his computer, booted up, and immediately scanned the numbers into an image and grafted the grid into type. From there, he dug deep into his file directory and pulled out what would open the way to an adventure the likes of which he was totally unprepared for.

Ads in the paper, appearances on television, cash rewards for accurate help; nothing had worked. The entire Hilsenrod family was struck with anxiety and sadness. But nobody, not even Natalie’s own blood relatives, felt the pain that William felt.

William had supported Natalie’s decision to work for the Wexler Biotechnology Co., even if it meant only coming home on the major holidays. She would always write from her base, the specific lab where she and a few other scientists from around the world toiled night and day in search of various cures. It was definitely taxing on their marriage, but the distance only made their love stronger, helping to keep it alive.

But now, things had gone horribly wrong. Three weeks earlier, Base 9 had caught on fire, and all the staff that was working there, including Natalie, had gone missing. Once the fire had been put out and the damage assessed, no signs of any workers, nor a handful of research documents, could be found. But, one deduction was made very clear by the investigators: it was no accident that the compound went aflame.

William wrapped his arms in as comforting a hug as he could muster around Natalie’s mother as she continued on another fit of bawling. As much as he could sympathize with the rest of her family, the constant air of sadness was getting to him. All the memories, concerns, what-ifs, what-weres, what-could-have-beens; it was simply too much for William to bear for so long in one sitting.

He told the Hilsenrod family he was going to take a nice, long walk through Battery Park; perhaps the cool, autumn New York air could clear his mind and soothe his nerves. The man opened a briefcase he had placed on the side opposite William, out of his view, and produced a piece of paper. It was a long string of three-digit numbers organized in a grid.

William took it, pondered over it, and then leered aghast as the meaning of the paper came to him. He recognized the pattern almost instantly as the emergency code he and Natalie shared, in case anything ever happened to one of them.

William glanced back and forth between the paper and the unknown man, his mind racing back to the present crisis at hand, and how crucial this paper was. Eventually he regained his senses enough to ask the gentleman, “Where the hell did you get this? How did you find me?”

At this, the mystery man leaned in and spoke very, very low. “I’m a colleague of your wife’s, the name’s Carter.”

“Carter Ford?”

“Yeah.”

“Natalie mentioned your name from time to time, aren’t you the supervisor of her base?”

“Bingo. I’m one of them, at least. I was off the work cycle that day when I received a fax from the lab. It was Natalie, she wrote that the guards in the lab staged a takeover and abducted most of the scientists. She was barely able to get the message to me before they got her and wrecked the base, I guess. I messaged her back with no response. That was all she sent, other than this grid and the clear instructions to find you in New York and make sure you got this.”

“Well now, that’s no way to talk to well-wishers, kid.”

“No way to talk to twenty-something adults, old fart.”

The man opened a briefcase he had placed on the side opposite William, out of his view, and produced a piece of paper. It was a long string of three-digit numbers organized in a grid.

William took it, pondered over it, and then leered aghast as the meaning of the paper came to him. He recognized the pattern almost instantly as the emergency code he and Natalie shared, in case anything ever happened to one of them.

William glanced back and forth between the paper and the unknown man, his mind racing back to the present crisis at hand, and how crucial this paper was. Eventually he regained his senses enough to ask the gentleman, “Where the hell did you get this? How did you find me?”

At this, the mystery man leaned in and spoke very, very low. “I’m a colleague of your wife’s, the name’s Carter.”

“Carter Ford?”

“Yeah.”

“Natalie mentioned your name from time to time, aren’t you the supervisor of her base?”

“Bingo. I’m one of them, at least. I was off the work cycle that day when I received a fax from the lab. It was Natalie, she wrote that the guards in the lab staged a takeover and abducted most of the scientists. She was barely able to get the message to me before they got her and wrecked the base, I guess. I messaged her back with no response. That was all she sent, other than this grid and the clear instructions to find you in New York and make sure you got this.”

“I can’t thank you enough, Carter.”

“No problem. I know that the safety of my team is in danger, and I especially would hate to see Natalie in trouble, she’s one of the finest researchers we’ve got.”

“Alright, but I need the key. Did she give you that?”

“Nope,” Carter announced sternly.

“What?! You rotten bastard, what I am supposed to do?!”

“Wait for a while, I know you’ll get the key.”

With a sigh, William relented. “You’re right, sending a code and key at the same time is stupid, even in a panic, Natalie would know better.”

“Well, take care of yourself, kid.”

“You too, old fart.”

“Until we meet again.”

And then it all clicked in William’s mind: the code, the key, and the message were all before him. He jolted from the bench, folded the paper neatly in his pocket, and dashed for the subway entrance he passed on the way in, hoping to catch the soonest train home.

On arrival, William scrambled to his computer, booted up, and immediately scanned the numbers into an image and grafted the grid into type. From there, he dug deep into his file directory and pulled out what would open the way to an adventure the likes of which he was totally unprepared for.

The sheer immensity of what William now faced was so much that he was dumbstruck at what he read. Natalie had been missing for days; everyone worried himself or herself sick for her, as they hadn’t seen heads or tails of her for three weeks. Ads in the paper, appearances on television, cash rewards for accurate help; nothing had worked. The entire Hilsenrod family was struck with anxiety and sadness. But nobody, not even Natalie’s own blood relatives, felt the pain that William felt.

William had supported Natalie’s decision to work for the Wexler Biotechnology Co., even if it meant only coming home on the major holidays. She would always write from her base, the specific lab where she and a few other scientists from around the world toiled night and day in search of various cures. It was definitely taxing on their marriage, but the distance only made their love stronger, helping to keep it alive.

But now, things had gone horribly wrong. Three weeks earlier, Base 9 had caught on fire, and all the staff that was working there, including Natalie, had gone missing. Once the fire had been put out and the damage assessed, no signs of any workers, nor a handful of research documents, could be found. But, one deduction was made very clear by the investigators: it was no accident that the compound went aflame.

William wrapped his arms in as comforting a hug as he could muster around Natalie’s mother as she continued on another fit of bawling. As much as he could sympathize with the rest of her family, the constant air of sadness was getting to him. All the memories, concerns, what-ifs, what-weres, what-could-have-beens; it was simply too much for William to bear for so long in one sitting.

He told the Hilsenrod family he was going to take a nice, long walk through Battery Park; perhaps the cool, autumn New York air could clear his mind and soothe his nerves. He donned his favorite brown jacket, left it unzipped, and meandered out of the apartment’s lobby in the park’s general direction, furrowed brow and panicking imagination in tow.

The light breeze blowing in his face was helping him relax. His shocks of dark brown hair swayed back ever so slightly, and William was lost in the moment. He had always loved New York City; the experience of being alone among so many people, and happy about it, would constant bring a light smile to his chapped lips. As the fall rainbow peered its way around the corner, he ambled along to the mouth of the nearest walkway, finally in the little safe haven he knew so well.

The state of affairs still weighed heavy on his mind, so he sat down on a convenient bench along the path. The wood creaked in welcome of William’s body, acclimating to his weight and holding him as he sat. He flung his head back, sighed, and took deep breaths of the chilled air around him; pragmatic meditation, one might say.

Minutes passed uneventfully, save for the occasional passerby, fantastically unconcerned with what William was doing. He was well relaxed, if not quite ready to return either to Natalie’s parent’s apartment, or his own.
