==Upgrade to Mediawiki 1.6==
I've come across Mediawiki 1.6, it offers new features and shiznitz. What do you guys think about upgrading? Do we need the features? For a full list of changes check [http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/tags/REL1_6_0/phase3/RELEASE-NOTES here]. Gimmie some input -- [[User:Nik Doof|Nik Doof]] 05:35, 27 April 2006 (EDT)
Oh cool .. they've fFixed some of the things which have been bothering me.  Like in Templates:
* Categories and "what links here" now update as expected when adding or removing links in a template.
* Template parameters can now have default values, as <nowiki>{{{name|default value}}}</nowiki>
That category thing has been bugging me.  And having default values is interesting, as well.
This makes good sense too, useful fFrom our perspective here:
* The account creation form has been separated from the user login form.
So I'll say it would be nice to have the upgrade, if it's not very difficult to implement.  Yes please. [[User:Scott|Scott]] 16:11, 27 April 2006 (EDT)
No Problem, will look into it tonight. As usual i'll give the forums some notification of the downtime. -- [[User:Nik Doof|Nik Doof]] 09:40, 29 April 2006 (EDT)

See that old pic in the upper left hand corner?  It's the old postcard, which is now {{Card|175|Binary}}.  It's cool and all .... but a bit, you know, aged.
Someone has also designed a "community banner" which has a drop-down menu leading to all the main important links, and I would like to see that on here, if it's possible. I am sorry all of this had to happen at the same time :\ [[User:Lhall|Lhall]] 23:45, 30 April 2006 (EDT)

The current thinking is to use something along the spirit of the new fFeel, using stuff inspired by the [http://www.perplexcity.com/static/downloads/downloads.nbuild Official Downloads Page].  Likely we will want to use this image in the corner:

[http://wiki.incognitus.net/ppc/skins/monobook/headbg.jpg The default grey background] can be changed to use the general stylings of [http://static.perplexcity.com/assets/public/wallpapers/wallpaper1_1024x768.jpg This sky pattern.]  I've started a couple things, but havent had time to fFinish.

When a new layout s decided upon, nik will need to put things in place manually. ''wiki.png''

:Layout Updated, When i get home i'll edit it to have a nice border and stuff, at the moment its just the bare JPG. -- [[User:Nik Doof|Nik Doof]] 09:39, 29 April 2006 (EDT)
::Ack, just seen its "WHEN the new layout is agreed". Anyway yes i can modify the skyline and do a fadeout to white. As for the cube in top left...it looks good :) -- [[User:Nik Doof|Nik Doof]] 09:43, 29 April 2006 (EDT)
:::Oh no worries :)  You're right it does look good :)  I've got a gradient thing started.  I was looking at having a horizontally oriented image.  But actually, just putting in the cube looks pretty sexy as is.  That may be all that was needed to add a nice little bit of zip to it.  Cheers! :) [[User:Scott|Scott]] 15:52, 29 April 2006 (EDT)
::::Okay, i've made a seperate theme selectable by your preferences. called PPCBook, working on it at the moment so its not logging 100% yet. -- [[User:Nik Doof|Nik Doof]] 04:21, 30 April 2006 (EDT)
:::::WOAH!!!  That's wicked cool!  sweet! [[User:Scott|Scott]] 04:48, 30 April 2006 (EDT)
::::::Okay, seems good, so i'm gonna switch over the themes now -- [[User:Nik Doof|Nik Doof]] 04:58, 30 April 2006 (EDT)

Hey, I've been out for the weekend, but I'm back now, so I missed all of the hubbub from earlier, but I've read the logs...so, here's my two cents. I think the wiki needs to be as plain design-wise as it's possible to be, because content should rule over style and design. For that reason, I'd suggest uploading the new skin as an option, and leaving the current default as the main one. (Of course, I haven't seen the new one. Is there a screencap somewhere?)

Also, someone has also designed a "community banner" which has a drop-down menu leading to all the main important links, and I would like to see that on here, if it's possible. I am sorry all of this had to happen at the same time :\ [[User:Lhall|Lhall]] 23:45, 30 April 2006 (EDT)

== Re: Edits and tone ==
I've noticed that we all tend to add lots of personal comments to wiki pages whenever we're posting information. I know that it makes it a more 'friendly' kind of interface, but on the other hand, it makes the pages a lot less factual. This kind of editing is something I picked up at the newspaper, where everything has to be opinion-neutral. So, hopefully everyone will keep an eye out for that kind of thing, so that the wiki remains a spec-free zone. :D

eta: Here, this is a good example of what I'm talking about (and I'm sorry to do a callout, but it can't really be helped).
''Edited'' New site, new look, new comments here.  Do we want any other changes to this site to be considered?  [[User:Scott|Scott]] 09:45, 2 May 2006 (PDT)

[http://wiki.incognitus.net/ppc/index.php?title=Adam_Cachin&oldid=11607 Old revision] - unnecessary personal stuff and comments that distract from the purpose of the page, vs. [[Adam Cachin|the current revision]] - edited to still include all of that stuff, but looking like "a person's hand hasn't touched it"...ie, it's in the right format, it doesn't look like an individual person has changed it, and it fits in with the rest of the pages seamlessly.

I guess this is also a note to let everyone know that I'll be editing this stuff out ruthlessly. I love you all; it's nothing personal! :D
== Moving and stuff ==
I added to ''sysop, bureaucrat, developer'' to [[User:BrianEnigma]].  may not need it all so much, but could be handy.  Makes sense.  If hes gonna be our host, he should have access to this stuff.
*sysop - gives you editing power on locked pages, the ability to make new users, and other little stuff.  Basically it's the gold key access.
*bureaucrat - means you can change privs of other people as well.
*developer - I'm not entirely sure what this does, but presumably gives greater access to backpanel controls, so you can easily change the look and fFeel of things, one assumes.
In case you were wondering, there is also a "bot" priv which make users bots.  hey hey :)  I'm not entirely sure what the subtleties of that are, actually.  presumably you can make a user a bot, and their edits are fFlagged a bit differently, fFor better or worse as you see fFit.  make scripts fFor rapid edits of stuff, or red-flag annoying users.  either way.  we have no bots.  :)

Moving and stuff

I added to sysop, bureaucrat, developer to User:BrianEnigma. may not need it all so much, but could be handy. Makes sense. If hes gonna be our host, he should have access to this stuff.

  • bureaucrat - means you can change privs of other people as well.
  • developer - I'm not entirely sure what this does, but presumably gives greater access to backpanel controls, so you can easily change the look and fFeel of things, one assumes.
