Perplex City Wiki Discussion Section

As this is a discussion page for the setup and layout of the Wiki, i've set up this page on here instead of the forums. Regular users of the Wiki should be able to join in the discussion on topics which affect the wiki.

Upgrade to Mediawiki 1.6

I've come across Mediawiki 1.6, it offers new features and shiznitz. What do you guys think about upgrading? Do we need the features? For a full list of changes check here. Gimmie some input -- Nik Doof 05:35, 27 April 2006 (EDT)

Oh cool .. they've fFixed some of the things which have been bothering me. Like in Templates:

  • Categories and "what links here" now update as expected when adding or removing links in a template.
  • Template parameters can now have default values, as {{{name|default value}}}

That category thing has been bugging me. And having default values is interesting, as well. This makes good sense too, useful fFrom our perspective here:

  • The account creation form has been separated from the user login form.

So I'll say it would be nice to have the upgrade, if it's not very difficult to implement. Yes please. Scott 16:11, 27 April 2006 (EDT)

No Problem, will look into it tonight. As usual i'll give the forums some notification of the downtime. -- Nik Doof 09:40, 29 April 2006 (EDT)

Possible Layout Changes

See that old pic in the upper left hand corner? It's the old postcard, which is now Season 1 Card #175 - Binary. It's cool and all .... but a bit, you know, aged.

The current thinking is to use something along the spirit of the new fFeel, using stuff inspired by the Official Downloads Page. Likely we will want to use this image in the corner:

The default grey background can be changed to use the general stylings of This sky pattern. I've started a couple things, but havent had time to fFinish.

When a new layout s decided upon, nik will need to put things in place manually. wiki.png

Layout Updated, When i get home i'll edit it to have a nice border and stuff, at the moment its just the bare JPG. -- Nik Doof 09:39, 29 April 2006 (EDT)
Ack, just seen its "WHEN the new layout is agreed". Anyway yes i can modify the skyline and do a fadeout to white. As for the cube in top left...it looks good :) -- Nik Doof 09:43, 29 April 2006 (EDT)
Oh no worries :) You're right it does look good :) I've got a gradient thing started. I was looking at having a horizontally oriented image. But actually, just putting in the cube looks pretty sexy as is. That may be all that was needed to add a nice little bit of zip to it. Cheers! :) Scott 15:52, 29 April 2006 (EDT)
Okay, i've made a seperate theme selectable by your preferences. called PPCBook, working on it at the moment so its not logging 100% yet. -- Nik Doof 04:21, 30 April 2006 (EDT)

Re: Edits and tone

I've noticed that we all tend to add lots of personal comments to wiki pages whenever we're posting information. I know that it makes it a more 'friendly' kind of interface, but on the other hand, it makes the pages a lot less factual. This kind of editing is something I picked up at the newspaper, where everything has to be opinion-neutral. So, hopefully everyone will keep an eye out for that kind of thing, so that the wiki remains a spec-free zone. :D

eta: Here, this is a good example of what I'm talking about (and I'm sorry to do a callout, but it can't really be helped).

Old revision - unnecessary personal stuff and comments that distract from the purpose of the page, vs. the current revision - edited to still include all of that stuff, but looking like "a person's hand hasn't touched it"...ie, it's in the right format, it doesn't look like an individual person has changed it, and it fits in with the rest of the pages seamlessly.

I guess this is also a note to let everyone know that I'll be editing this stuff out ruthlessly. I love you all; it's nothing personal! :D
