Department of Languages

General

The department maintains strong ties both to the department of Social Sciences and to the department of Arts. The Tongues sculpture in Azad Park is an example of the collaboration between the departments of Languages and Arts. The sculpture is a 20-metre tall wave form in bronze; both sides of the form are covered in letters from over 400 different languages, containing a message to be decoded. Although the sculpture was erected more than 20 years ago, only a fraction of its contents have been deciphered.

Historically, the Department of Natural Sciences has dominated the annual inter-departmental Snowball Fight. They lost, however, in 2007 (270) to the Department of Languages.

This is a proud day for us. The honour of our victory will be the brightest gem in the crown of my tenure as senior fellow.

--Languages Senior Fellow Estelle Sedgewick
